Fragmentary records of the now defunct First United Church of Christ and its parent congregations, the German Evangelical Lutheran Emmanuel Church (earlier Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church) and the Evangelical Congregational Church, illustrating the role of German immigrants in Tacoma life and their roles in creating religious institutions. Most of the records consist of correspondence, financial, membership, and club records, annual reports, certificates, directories, newsletters, pamphlets, reports, and weekly service bulletins.

Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1928 when thirty families separated themselves from Peace Lutheran Church, Tacoma, Wash., a member of the Ohio Synod; Aug. 17, 1929 the newly formed congregation incorporated; after unsuccessful efforts to join United Lutheran Church, voted Aug. 5, 1930 to join the Evangelical and Reformed Church of North America; church then named German Evangelical Lutheran Emmanuel Church; Evangelical Congregational Church was founded Aug. 1, 1920; ca. 1956 ...
